Here is a conundrum for a Tuesday lunchtime. You’re filing down a new type punch, but you can’t see what your letter or symbol is going to come out like, and getting ink on it isn’t an option. This nifty invention saved people a lot of hassle: you take your piece of type, heat it up over a candle to allow for a build up of soot. Then you proof the type on the paper at a 90 degree angle until it comes out perfect!
If it wasn’t already impressive enough, our resident fountain of knowledge doesn’t know of another one in existence. Can anyone prove him wrong?
